Male’-(Scene-13- 17 April) Police revealed details of arresting procedures of the late Hussain Solah for the time he was held in custody from April 9 to 13. Police who also took care of the 27-year-old while he was in the Atholhuvehi (Police station allegedly where Solah was murdered) detention center in Male also claimed that they had followed official procedures to the letter. At a press conference at the Maldives Police Service office in Male, Sub Inspector Ismail Naveen told reporters that Constable Mohamed Rizlan took care of Solah's releasing procedures on the night of April 13. Rizlan who was summoned to the press conference confirmed Naveen's statement in front of reporters.Naveen said that Constable Hussain Fazeel had handed back all the personal items to Solah on his release, and that it was Lance Corporal Ashraf Afeef who had called, unsuccessfully, Solah's sister Aishath Didi to inform her of his release. Ashraf told reporters that he then called Solah's mother and talked with her for about two minutes, informing her that police was releasing Solah into her custody.Police said that it was Constable Hafiz Ali who opened the door of Atholhuvehi so that Solah could walk away to freedom.Police also showed to reporters what they claimed to be Solah's fingerprinted documents during arresting procedures. Among them included a document shown to reporters what police claimed was Solah's signature and fingerprint on a release form from police custody.Sub Inspector Abdulla Nawaz told yesterday's press conference that police was doing everything they can to find out the truth behind Solah's death and divers from the police forensic department were even now trying to locate any possible evidences from the Male harbor.Nawaz also said that police are currently studying closed circuit TV footage covering the date of Solah's release until the day of his death.
The press conference created more questions than answers since police failed to forward solid evidence that Hussain Solah was released. The signatures on the documents differ considerably different even to a layman’s eyes. The CCTV footages promised at the beginning of the press conference were never released. The release papers were visibly edited and police could not produce any witness who saw and met Solah since the release.
