MDP condemns Foreign Minister Shaheed’s ‘premature’ comments on Solah’s autopsy report

Male’ - (Scene-26- 22 April) -The Maldivian Democratic Party issued a statement on Sunday condemning the comments made by Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed regarding the autopsy of Hussain Solah. MDP’s statement called the public comments made by Dr Shaheed ‘premature prevarication and an attempt to distort the larger truth surrounding the cause of death of the deceased.”According to the MDP statement, the autopsy report was handed over to the Maldives High Commission with strict instruction for the sealed envelope to be opened in the concurrent presence of the deceased’s family members and the Maldives Police personnel. “Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed made a statement to the Maldives and international media from 1715hrs on 21 April that the preliminary results of the Mr. Solah’s post-mortem ruled out violence and establishes death by drowning,” the statement read. “However, the preliminary report was at the time yet to be opened in the presence of the family representatives and the Maldives Police. The Maldivian Democratic Party condemns this obvious prevarication by the Maldives Government.” The statement further said that Solah’s family has yet to be summoned to the Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka to open the report.The statement concludes stating that: “The Maldivian Democratic Party believes that decisions and official public announcements on the cause and circumstance surrounding the death of the late Mr. Hussain Solah should be based on a legal review of all the results outlined in the autopsy report.”
